Strep B – Birth Defect Prevention for Expecting Parents

Diabetes & Maternal Illness

Group B streptococcus (GBS) infection during pregnancy can cause bladder and womb infections, stillbirth, and may expose newborns to life-threatening sepsis, pneumonia, or meningitis. Treatment with antibiotics can reduce these risks. GBS is a major concern for both maternal and neonatal health outcomes.

Exposed newborns may develop severe infections that affect blood, lungs, or brain, and mothers can also face complications. Because of its seriousness, testing and timely treatment are strongly recommended during pregnancy to protect both mother and child.
