Risks of Painting – Birth Defect Prevention for Expecting Parents

Home and Garden

Painting while pregnant can be risky due to past and present paint toxins. Exposure to lead-based paint, fungicides, and solvents like glycol ethers can increase the risk of birth defects. Renovating areas with pre-1970s paint is especially hazardous because of airborne lead dust.

Painting or remodeling during pregnancy may also release toxic particles and fumes into the air. Lead from older paints is especially dangerous if disturbed, while chemicals in modern paints, such as fungicides and solvents, can pose additional risks to both mother and baby. Paint can also contain toxins designed to inhibit mold growth and solvents such as glycol ethers.
