Thyroid disorders, particularly hypothyroidism (thyroid hormone deficiency), have been linked to lower IQ in newborns and an increased incidence of miscarriage and birth defects if left untreated. The treatment for hypothyroidism is synthetic hormone replacement and is generally considered safe due to its nearly identical chemical structure to the natural hormone. If you are planning to get pregnant, talk to your doctor about having a pre-conception or prenatal thyroid screening to detect low-grade (sub clinical) hypothyroidism.
