Medical drugs can be life-saving and help to manage disease. Unfortunately, sometimes they can affect unborn babies in negative ways. Drugs that pass through the placenta to the developing baby at critical times during pregnancy can cause any number of adverse effects. No drug is truly “safe” during pregnancy, but some drugs are necessary for the survival or health of the mother, so the risks of using medication during pregnancy must be balanced against the risk of the condition being treated.
